Have you ever wanted a custom painting done of a place that has special meaning to you? Or did you fall in love with one of my originals, only to find out it had already been sold? Whatever the case may be, it would be my pleasure to create a one-of-a-kind original oil painting for you. There are a few steps to this process, however, please read them carefully, as my goal is to ensure you receive a piece of art that you truly love.
STEP 1
Decide on what type of scene you would like me to paint. If it is of a special place, have at least one photo ready to send to me (even better if you have several photos). Keep in mind that no photo translates perfectly into painting form (at least in my style). I will try to keep the composition as similar as possible, but to achieve my style, I will need to make some artistic decisions, especially when it comes to colours and lighting. Of course, I will let you know about these types of big decisions to ensure they are to your liking.
STEP 2
Go through my gallery and choose a few paintings that you like best. I don't replicate my paintings, as I want every original to be unique, however, I can definitely do similar compositions and colours. For example, if you like a scene I've painted, but would like it painted with a different sky/lighting, that is something I can do. Even if you are having me do a painting of a special place, knowing which of my paintings you like best helps me when it comes to colour choices.
STEP 3
Decide whether you want your piece done on regular width or gallery width stretcher bars. If you are planning on having your painting framed, I recommend that you choose the regular width stretcher bars, as I will leave the sides unpainted (the frame will hide the sides anyway). If you would like to be able to hang the painting without a frame, I recommend that you choose the wider, gallery width stretcher bars with the sides painted to match the rest of the painting (this costs more, but you will save money on framing). The visual differences can be seen in the images to the right.
STEP 4
Decide where you are going to put the painting and how big you would like it to be. If you are undecided on where to put the piece, that's ok, just have a look at the sizes below to have a sense for how big the painting will be. A good general rule is for the painting to be approximately 75% the width of the furniture it will be hanging over (ie. couch, desk, mantle, etc.). For example, a typical couch is 50-60" wide, so a 36-48" wide painting would fit well over it. Keep in mind that a frame will add 4-10" of width to the piece.

FAQ
Do you recreate originals that you've already painted?
No. However, I will do similar compositions or choose similiar colours.
Can you do a painting based on a photo I have taken?
Absolutely! I often change the lighting and colours to make for a more visually pleasing painting and match my style, but will keep the composition as similar as you'd like.
How long does it take to get a commission painting?
It varies, based on size and complexity, but in general, it takes 2-4 weeks to complete the painting and then an additional 3-12 weeks to dry. If I am currently working on other commissions, I will need to finish those before starting a new commission.
How are large paintings shipped?
Paintings can be shipped stretched as-is (wrapped with large bubble wrap), or rolled in a large tube. Shipping the painting rolled is cheaper, but then would require you to have the painting stretched by a professional framer.

STEP 5
Decide on your budget. Original commissions start at $1000. There are multiple factors that go into the pricing of an original commission, such as (but not limited to):

STEP 6
Contact me and include as much of the above information as you can. Of course, if you have any questions or need clarification, don't hesitate to ask. Commissions are taken first come, first served, so please be aware that there may be a delay in starting your piece if I am currently working on other commissions (I will give you an estimated time for completion when you contact me). Please include your mailing address when contacting me so that I can give you an accurate cost for shipping.
STEP 7
In order to start, I require a 50%, non-refundable deposit (this will cover my costs for supplies and time invested). Once the painting is complete, I will send you photos of the piece, as well as a second invoice for the remaining 50% plus shipping. It is very important that you are aware that since I work in oil, my paintings take 3-12 weeks to be dry enough to ship (the larger the painting, the longer it takes). Though I do want to get you your painting as quickly as I can, you don't want me to ship it sooner than it's ready to be shipped, as this can damage the painting.
